How Mocean Began
Meet Michael Carey, the founder of Mocean Kayaks and Canoes. After more than 30 years building homes, communities, and a career in construction, Michael set down his tools in 2019 to follow a different calling. For years, the idea of thermoforming an outrigger canoe had been taking shape in his mind. No one had ever done it in plastic, and he was determined to be the first.
That vision sparked the creation of Mocean Kayaks and Canoes, where innovation meets tradition on the waters of the Pacific Northwest. Based just outside Anacortes, Washington, our company brings a fresh wave of creativity to paddlesports. While Mocean is new, our team carries more than 50 years of collective experience in thermoformed kayak manufacturing. The result is watercraft that blend advanced design, superior craftsmanship, and outstanding performance.

The journey began in 2016 when Michael met with Tom Derrer, founder of Eddyline Kayaks. Tom encouraged him to return once he had a design and mold in hand, echoing the collaborative spirit that shaped paddlesports in its early days. Inspired by that generosity, Michael set out to reimagine what kayaks and canoes could be.
Today, we work with a seasoned designer whose portfolio spans nearly two decades and partnerships with eight leading paddling brands. Our team of craftsmen are experts in thermoforming and bring precision, care, and skill to every step of production. Together, they’ve helped Mocean establish a reputation for excellence even as a young company.
Made Here, Built Right
Our 18,000-square-foot facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a 5-axis CNC machine and dual thermoforming ovens. This allows us to design and manufacture each component in-house to the highest standards. Yet even with all this innovation, we remain rooted in an “old school” commitment: listening to the needs of our dealers and paddlers and building lasting relationships through trust and respect.
Every Mocean kayak and canoe is assembled by hand with meticulous attention to detail. Made in the USA, our boats embody both the precision of modern engineering and the craftsmanship of a team that truly loves what they do.
